105 days to go – Here comes the Olympic Torch!

by 2010vanfan

Are you ready for it?  I am!!  And I know that the Torchbearers I know, like Robyn, Vicki and Patti certainly are!  It was handed over to Vancouver from Greece this morning before boarding a plane to Canada.  The festivities to kick-off the Canadian Olympic Torch Relay start tomorrow in Victoria!

Most of the activities will be centred around Victoria’s inner harbour, with the Provincial Legislature and the Empress Hotel as backdrops.  Here is what Vancouver 2010 says is going to be happening:

“Victoria being the first community on the Olympic Torch Relay route, celebration plans organized will make this day even more memorable. It includes a First Nations welcome ceremony and music celebrating Canada’s diversity.

Set against the backdrop of the historic legislative buildings, The Fairmont Empress hotel and Victoria’s stunning inner harbour, the celebration starting at 6:30pm will feature unforgettable ensemble performances featuring many of Victoria’s best-known musicians, performers and artists, acrobatics and dance troupes as well as involvement by local luminaries, athletes and celebrities.

Attendees can expect a spectacular multimedia presentation, exciting street-level animation with giant puppets, interactive characters and lanterns, and a choreographed aerial sculpture featuring audience interaction. Thousands of handheld small torch replicas, state-of-the-art glow products and a thrilling pyrotechnics finale will mirror the symbolism of the Olympic Flame. The Olympic Flame is scheduled to arrive at 7:30pm.

An ensemble concert featuring a multimedia segment, a theme song specifically written for the celebration, and tenor Ken Lavigne plus a choir and members of the Victoria Symphony and First Nations drummers will create much excitement for this high-energy finale.”

I’m so happy that I’m done work early enough tomorrow that I’ll be able to watch a lot of this on TV.  Wish I could be there!!  Send me photos if you do get to go, or stories!  It will be amazing!  Any guesses on who Canada’s first Olympic Torchbearer will be??

We do have a few things happening in the Olympic Superstore tomorrow, including fashion shows and a pin launch/release by Coca-Cola at the Happiness Cafe!  Should be interesting.  There is no real schedule, it’s more of a drop in and visit type thing.  I work from 9:30am to 5:00pm.  I look forward to seeing you there!
